9/21/2008 PORTLAND—
The Molenes, a band the Portland Phoenix called
“one of New England’s premier alt-country/Americana bands, headlines “A
Dust-Up at the Empire” at Empire Dine & Dance, Sept. 26. They join with local
slamgrassers the Grassholes and the whisky-and-nicotine fueled Streaking
Healys in an effort to cement the Empire’s status as the new home for roots
and twang in Portland.

The event is sponsored by WCLZ, 98.9 FM.

Following great shows with the Grassholes, Toughcats, Roy Davis, Gypsy
Tailwind, Darien Brahms, and the Greetings From Area Code 207 release
party, plus the weekly bluegrass of the Stowaways, there’s talk that there’s
finally a room in Portland ready to replace the much-lamented Raoul’s and
Stone Coast Brewery.

The Molenes feature guitarist and frontman Dave Hunter, a veteran of London’
s indie-rock scene who’s a renowned guitarist and guitar journalist, along with
former WOW bassist Andrew Russell, drummer Zach Field, who’s backed
everyone from Jon Nolan to the Mill City Ramblers, and pedal-steel guitarist
Bruce Derr, who has toured and recorded with Slaid Cleaves, Patty Griffin,
Joyce Anderson and Say Zu Zu. They’re currently supporting their second full-
length album, the critically acclaimed Songs of Sin and Redemption. Jamie
Perkins at the Portsmouth Herald praised them for “singing songs that glorify
the guns, guilt and gallows of the American cultural landscape.”

The Grassholes are a six-piece bluegrass outfit that plays around one mic
and hammers out string-band traditionals like “Shady Grove” and “Sittin’ on
Top of the World” along with originals that range from Outlaw (“Janey”) to
Cash-Carter duets (“Kicked in the Shins”). They’ll be using the night to release
their first live album, recorded at the St. Lawrence Arts Center as part of the
WMPG Bluegrass Extravaganza.

The Streaking Healys are every band you hope is playing in the background as
you walk into your favorite watering hole and order an ice cold beer. Rolling
Stones rock paired with George Jones country, they’ve got a twang that feels
like home and enough giddy-up to get you out of your chair. Full of Nashville’s
sound paired with Maine’s irony, the band pull sounds from the likes of Uncle
Tupelo, the Statler Brothers, Merle Haggard, and David Allan Coe. They’re
currently supporting their debut release, Loveless, recorded with Jim Begley at
the Studio.
